Recording Diet Method

Japan, culture — hidetox @ 2:27 pm

[Japanese version is below /

Toshio Okada, formerly known as the most famous ‘Otaku’ commentarist and a fat man as well, is now an evagelist of a new safe diet method. He calls it ‘Recording Diet.’ Seeing is believing. See his pictures below:

How can he achieve the remarkable success? Here’s his words:

The point is, diet like work.
You will plan schedule at first when you start something, won’t you?
In Recording Diet, you will start from recording all the meals you eat. It tells you why are you fat. This is the first phase. And the next phase, every morning, plan what you eat. Eat what you planed to eat.
In the end, you will lose your weight naturally.

The point is, “cast out the rest part of what you eat.”
Think “I will lose my weight as much as I cast.” And also, “Now I’m going to be extravagant and cast my food away!”
For example, I cut my “Mega Mac,” then I pick the most delicious part, eat it and cast the rest away.
Or another example, I will eat a tip of a cake, put a paper napkin or a saucer on it, then ask a waitress to take it back to the kitchen.

[English version is above /

Pricing is a business myth

Pricing your product expensive is the easiest way to enhance your product’s value, isn’t it?

I bought 50 grams of coffee for $10. I like it.
But there are many cheaper ones.
I’m not sure for the reason why I pay much for a commodity.

Is it expensive because of high value?
Or I feel high value for its price?

Am I satisfied with it’s taste? or ‘price?’

Do I like its taste?, flavor?, or ‘experience?’
I mean “paying much for an expensive product.”

I’m not sure as I said above, but I have an assumption.

Don’t you think that we have desire to spend money?

I’m sure we have it, even if you don’t have a shopping addiction.
It’s not instinctive actually, but I believe it is.

It can’t tell us the reason why I pay much for a commodity,
but I think it can describe some part of the reason.

————

Recently, ‘polarization in consumption patterns’ is one of the most important issues in Japanese politics and economics.

For example, a young working lady, with average or lower income, carrying an expensive Louis Vuitton’s bag for everyday use, often takes a lunch at McDonald’s. She spend her money for what meets her criteria, otherwise she saves as much as possible.

It’s quite an extreme consumption pattern, isn’t it?

Day by day, ‘income class’ concept is getting fuzzy.

————

Oops, I’ve written a lot of explaination of a relation between price and value. But I’ve just remembered a better example.

Can you distinguish prices of different kinds of wine?

Proposal to the mailing list feature of Google Apps

IT, design, web — hidetox @ 11:36 am

Google Apps has a feature to manage mailing lists.

It’s nessasary for the email hosting service, especially for business users.

But Google Apps’ mailing list feature is not perfect. I found a problem. Let me describe it.

If you use mailing lists in business, you may know all the recipients, and all the recipients know each other. But sometimes you make a misstake, for example, you misunderstand the list member so that your email doesn’t reach to appropriate recipients. Or you will accidentally send your email to unwanted recipients.

This is the problem. I thinks it’s a problem of design, so it can be fixed with an aspect of design.

Here’s the solution. Add an email address lists to each mails posted to the mailing list. Then you can check the list member each time you post or receive.

Do you want to know how it works? See qwik.jp(qwikWeb) and its ancestor quickml(hosting service QuickML.com).

Of course, appending members list to each post is not a general solutions. I think this is effective in business mailing lists.

Please consider about this, Google Apps team.

PS3 LittleBigPlanet and Hacked Super Mario

Japan, culture, design, web — hidetox @ 10:31 am

Are you inserested in LittleBigPlanet?

Or do you think it’s too complex? I know some people says “LittleBigPlanet is not a game, but a simulator. I can’t play it. I just want to play a game. I don’t want to work building game stages instead of the game production company. They cast off their work as a game creator.”

I can understand that opinion. But here is another aspect. Maybe there are some users who make better game stages than the game production company.

I’ve come to that idea after I saw this movie: Playing hacked version of “Super Mario World”

This version is insanely harder than the original version. Its replay movie itself, not a game but only a movie, becomes entertainment. Many people enjoy watching it. On the other hand, there are some people who desire to play crazy hard stages.

I would say there is an ecosystem; stage creators, players, replay watchers.

If LittleBigPlanet succeed in building such an ecosystem, its whole experience will be so unique and satisfy all of them.

* Please notice that such hack is completely illegal abuse. They must use a kind of NES emulator. It’s modified without an agreement of the original copyright holder(Nintendo) as well.

What’s that noisy comments?

It’s Nico Nico Douga.

You can see many comments moving across the movie right to left. It’s added by many users on Nico Nico Douga, a web service that users can add overlay comment on any video(YouTube video or upload to Nico Nico Douga).

Your RoR(rails) app’s view x10 faster

IT, tech, web — hidetox @ 4:55 am

I found usefull info to tune your Rails app.

Yugui, Japanese Ruby on Rails hacker, suggests the way to accelarate rails’ view x10 faster.(Rails

Problem

You want to use page-cache mechanism as much as possible. That can accelerate your rails app. But most of the pages aren’t cached, are they?

He says Ruby on Rails is slow because of views and routings processes are slow. So we want to use page-cache mechanism as much as possible. But many ‘non-personalized’ pages have actually personalized parts something like that: “Hello xxx(nickname) [Sign Out, Your Profile].” Any page containing such dynamic messages are not cached. Even if it’s just a one line message (hello foobar).

Solution

He proposes this combination

  • Apache SSI (server side inclusion)
  • PHP
  • memcached

to prevent such slow processes. Apply page-cache to all ‘non-personalized’ pages. Use PHP and SSI to insert ‘hello foobar’ string by sharing session data with rails app.

As you know, PHP is faster than rails. Of course, it’s easier to write app code by rails than PHP. So you write your app code on rails, page-cache it, and insert(SSI) some simple dynamic strings (showing nickname or something) by PHP.

Note

Please check his blog entry for detail. There’s the code you can use.

If you have some difficulty reading his(Japanese) blog, please contact me.

You need to use it with care. Rails session data format is Marshal.dump by default. But he modifies it to JSON format to interchange with PHP. That causes a restriction. You can only store these data types as session data: number, string, hash, array, nonetheless, he says it’s not matter because he stores only ‘plain’ types of data into sessions.

——–

His next entry show another way

It’s interesting, but in my humble opinion, dangerous way.

Preview in text-based browser

IT, tech, web — hidetox @ 1:23 am

Does anybody know how to preview your website with a text-based browser without installing it? I want a web-based tool like The W3C Markup Validation Service. Anything like that?
